This session provides an overview of the documentation, coding and billing guidelines for professional Evaluation & Management (E/M) services. Key topics include Medical Decision Making (MDM) and time-based criteria for assigning E/M levels; split or shared E/M visits, and critical care guidelines. The 2023 Medicare rules will be highlighted, and updates and proposed changes will be included as appropriate.

Our Presenters

Jean C. Russell, MS, RHIT is a partner at Epoch Health Solutions LLC. She has more than 30 years of healthcare and information system experience. Her areas of expertise include the Medicare and NY Medicaid outpatient prospective payment systems (APCs and APGs) as well as Charge Description Master (CDM) and outpatient billing and coding compliance.

She is a frequent speaker at the national, state and local levels for HFMA and AHIMA professional groups.

Jean has a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Houston and a bachelor’s in biology from Colgate University.

Veronica R. Ziac, MBA is a consultant with Epoch Health Solutions LLC. She has more than 25 years of healthcare administration experience. Her areas of expertise include revenue cycle, information systems, physician practice management and compliance.

Most recently, Veronica was the director of revenue cycle integrity at a critical access hospital. Prior to that, she was the chief operating officer for a large multispeciality hospital-based physician practice.

Veronica has an MBA in healthcare administration from Union College and a bachelor’s degree from the University at Albany. 

She is a member of HFMA and MGMA and has been certified in healthcare compliance by the Healthcare Compliance Association.
